Pick Up App – the App that can help a lot senior person

Posted by

Interact with the App Prototype Here

Background

The Pick Up project originated during my studies at SpringBoard, focusing on UX/UI Design. It was inspired by the harsh winter weather in Canada, where seniors faced challenges like shoveling snow and navigating treacherous road conditions. Through research and interactions with seniors, the project evolved beyond snow removal to address broader issues, as detailed in my research report.

During Nova Scotia’s severe winters, elderly individuals encounter difficulties accessing essential services. This app aims to assist seniors by facilitating pick-ups and drop-offs, turning a potentially challenging task into a playful and community-driven experience.

What I can do

Design an app where users can post requests for assistance, whether it’s picking up groceries, collecting mail, or offering a ride. The goal is to create a user-friendly platform that fosters a sense of community and helps seniors overcome weather-related challenges.

Who the App for

This project targets seniors unable to venture out during winter (or adverse weather conditions) and individuals willing to provide assistance, including those with cars or those traveling along similar routes.

How the App Work

  1. Users post requests with specified time limits.
  2. Other users accept requests and set their own availability.
  3. Credits are earned for completed tasks and can be redeemed for rewards. Users failing to fulfill accepted requests may face consequences, subject to mutual agreement.

Key App Features

  • Request posting and acceptance
  • Timers for request listing and deliveries, with notifications for time limits
  • Reward system to incentivize assistance
  • Messaging system to enhance the helping experience

User Testing

The app prototype underwent testing with five users, covering tasks like request creation, task completion, and navigating the home page. While most functions worked well, user feedback led to improvements in the interface design.

Three tasks are set for the users:

Set a request: As a new user walk through the register, set up a request, and publish the request.

Accomplish task: Log in to the app, accept the task and confirm the task is finished.

Test the home page interface menu, such as filter, information, and message pop-up buttons.

All users finished tasks. Request publish, and task accepts process work well. But the home page interface has problems.

The filter icon setting is crowded and untidy. The second version prototype is edited on this problem. Filters are gathered in a drop-down filter button. At the same time, the user account button is moved to the bottom navigation, page, and the icons’ colours are adjusted as well. (The left is 1st version, and the right one is 2nd version)

Issues Addressed:

  1. Crowded filter icon settings: Revised to a more organized drop-down filter button.
  2. Small icons for senior users: Increased icon size and added text to bottom navigation for better clarity.
  3. Invision interaction: Some issues persist, particularly with pop-up interactions, highlighting areas for further improvement.
